HOW TO CORNROW * FOR BEGINNERS | GUIDE
Cornrowing natural hair can be a bit tricky at first, but with practice, it becomes easier. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to cornrow your natural hair:
What You’ll Need:
- Comb (wide-tooth and rat-tail comb)
- Hair clips or elastic bands (to section hair)
- Hair gel or cream (optional, for hold)
- Mirror (preferably two to see the back)
- Patience and practice!
Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Prep Your Hair
- Start by washing and conditioning your hair to remove any buildup.
- Apply a leave-in conditioner or moisturizing cream to. keep your hair hydrated.
- Detangle your hair gently using a wide-tooth comb. This. will make the process much easier.
2. Section Your Hair
- Divide your hair into manageable sections using a rat-tail comb. Start by parting it down the middle or creating smaller parts, depending on the size of the cornrows you want.
- Clip the sections you’re not working with out of the way. You can tie off the loose sections with elastic bands or hair clips.
3. Start at the Front
- Take a small section of hair at the front of the part you want to cornrow. The size of this section will determine how thick the cornrow will be.
- Split the section into **three equal strands** (this is similar to starting a basic braid).
4. Begin Braiding
- Start by crossing the right strand over the middle, then the left strand over the middle.
- As you continue braiding, **add hair from each side** (left and right) to the strands before crossing them over. You’ll add small amounts of hair from the edges into each of the three strands as you go down, just like a French braid.
- Keep the tension even to avoid pulling too tightly, which can cause breakage.
5. Continue Down the Scalp
- Keep adding hair to the three strands as you go down toward the nape of your neck. Use your fingers to keep the strands separated.
- Try to keep the parts clean and the braid tight, but not uncomfortable.
6. Finish the Braid
- Once you reach the end of the section (near the nape of your neck or at the desired length), you can finish off the braid like a regular three-strand braid.
- Secure the end with a small elastic band or hair tie.
7. Repeat for the Rest of Your Hair
- Repeat the process for each section, working your way around the head.
- If you want larger or smaller cornrows, adjust the section size at the start.
8. Final Touches
- Once all your cornrows are done, you can apply a light holding gel to smooth any flyaways.
- Optionally, you can tie a scarf around your hair to set the braids in place and make them last longer.
Tips for Better Results:
- Moisturize your hair: Cornrows work best on hair that’s moisturized and manageable.
- Use a mirror: If you’re new to cornrowing, using two mirrors to see the back of your head will help a lot.
- Practice makes perfect: Don’t get discouraged if your first attempt doesn’t come out perfectly. The more you practice, the better you’ll get at it!
